Doubles Tournament

We will be hosting the 2025 STC Open Doubles Tournament the weekend of July 26th and 27th. Tournament Directors are Janet Wenzel and Scott Zenack.  This event is open to all STC members.  There will be separate A, B+, and B level draws if there are enough teams entered.  Players of both genders and mixed doubles teams are welcome, but there won't be separate draws based on gender.  Depending on the number of teams, early rounds may be set up in a round robin or group play format rather than single elimination. The B and B+ divisions will likely start earlier in the morning (probably at 8:15) than the A division, at least on Saturday.  Before signing up, players should ensure they are available both days.

The tournament entry fee is $10 per person ($20 per team).  Tennis balls, snacks, and drinks will be provided.

Please sign up by Monday, July 21st on yourcourts.com.  When you do so, please indicate which division you would like to play in and who your partner is.  Here is a link to the event sign-up page.

If you have difficulty finding a partner, contact Scott at sazenack@comcast.net.  We'll help, but we cannot guarantee that we'll be able to match players up.  To help ensure a competitive and fun event, the tournament directors reserve the right to make any final decision if there is a question on the division / level of a player or team.

Thank you and hope to see you in the tournament!

Club Improvement Project

The long-awaited club improvement project is about to get underway, likely starting this Friday and going into next week.  The club will be open during this time, although Court 1 may be closed part of the time.  There will be quite a bit of equipment involved.  Please pay attention to any parking restrictions and move your car if requested.

As a reminder, the project will

  • Expand and improve the seating area and add semi-permanent shade sails to provide shade for both the seating area and the “grandstand.”

  • Improve the entry walkway and border with low shrubbery

  • Clear the weedy area in front of courts 1 and 2 and replace with a bed of rhododendrons

  • Regrade and re-gravel the parking lot.

  • Plant a commemorative tree for Mike Posternak, whose generosity made this project possible

Court Closures

We’ve had quite a challenging season so far with all of the rain.  One of the challenges has been finding the balance between closing courts to protect them from damage while not restricting members’ ability to use playable courts.  In particular, we probably have not been as prompt to re-open courts as we could have been.

Let’s be clear: it’s in all of our interest to protect the courts.  Playing on courts that are too soft can seriously damage them.

After discussions with our court manager, Mark Brass, we are making some changes to the way we handle court closing and openings.  Mark will declare courts “closed” only when they are truly unplayable, and will try to offer guidance on how long he thinks wet courts need to dry out.  He will make every effort to get back to the club frequently to provide updates.  If he has not yet updated the status of a court to “open,” we ask you to use your best judgement when deciding if the court is dry enough to play on.  Please err on the side of caution.  If your sneakers are leaving marks or depressions in the clay, the court is too soft.

As a reminder, Mark posts court conditions on the website homepage and on the Teamreach group “STCCourtReport2025.

Guest Fees

A reminder to please pay your guest fees ($5 per guest per visit).  You may pay them online by going to the Members page of the website.
